Optics Technologies Research Laboratory

The Optics Technologies Research Laboratory was put into operation in 2008 in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ege University. The scientific research and product development studies have been continued with the joint studies with the faculty members of Biomedical Electronic Laboratory. The laboratory infrastructure continues to be developed with The support of TÜBİTAK and Ege University Scientific Research programs.  The projects of TUBİTAK 1001 (106T651 and 113E610) and TÜBİTAK COST (113E771) and several projects in the field of biomedical optics and material research concluded with success.

The main research areas of our laboratory are biomedical optics imaging and analysis, biomedical device development, magneto-optical measurement systems and material characterization, spectroscopic measurement and analysis, fiber optic sensor designs, etc.

Our aim is to carry out studies on polarization optics and measurement of optical properties of magnetic materials (Measurement of Faraday, Kerr Effects, etc.) and to develop prototypes of measurement systems for medical diagnosis and treatment which are necessary in the field of health. In addition, it is our priority to carry out joint multidisciplinary research with internal and external collaborations to support undergraduate and graduate education, to provide consultancy, training and optical measurement services.

Graduate studies completed in our laboratory;

- 2 completed MSc theses on optical-based surface roughness determination,

- 2 doctoral and 4 MSc theses on magneto-optical materials and measurement systems,

- 1 doctorate and 1 MSc thesis in the field of fiber optics,

- 2 MSc theses on optical-based tissue characterization,

- 1 doctoral thesis on blood glucose measurement by optical method,

- 1 MSc thesis in tissue blood flow imaging,

- 1 MSc thesis on blood coagulation,

- 1 doctoral thesis on photon-magnon interaction in magnetic materials

- 1 doctoral thesis was written on the analysis of cell images.

Current graduate and undergraduate studies in our  laboratory;

-  Optical imaging

-  Viscosity measurement

-  The photo-acoustic effect

- Cold plasma system

- Magnetic levitation

- Biomedical applications with laser speckle

- Alignment of structures in high electric field and magnetic field

Many undergraduate students interested in photonics and biomedical optics have been studying here, so they can gain research laboratory experience. An average of 10 undergraduate dissertations are carried out each year, and papers and publications are published from these theses. Students who gain experience in this laboratory are preferred by institutions with advanced research structures in our country for internship and job opportunities.
